South America is the more wild of the Americas and a continent of comparisons, nestled between the Caribbean, the South Pacific, and the South Atlantic Oceans.

The Andes, the largest mountain range outside of Asia, the Amazon, the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island, Fernando de Noronha, heavenly beaches (like those in northeastern Brazil), vast deserts (like the Atacama), icy landscapes (like Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego), the tallest waterfall in the world (the 979-meter-tall Angel Falls in Venezuela), one of the largest waterfalls Iguaçu Falls in Argentina and Brazil, and many other breath-taking natural wonders.

The work of man has also left unique treasures on the continent, including the oldest rock paintings in the Americas (at the Serra da Capivara), the ruins of ancient civilizations (Machu Picchu and other Inca cities; the Moais in Easter Island), and world-class metropolises (So Paulo, Buenos Aires, Cordoba (city, Argentina), Bogotá, Caracas, Santiago, Lima, and Rio de Janeiro). The most southerly city in the world, Ushuaia, as well as some of its most notable celebrations, including Rio's Carnival, Belem's Cirio de Nazaré, the Tango World Championship, and Argentina's Vendimia festival, are all a part of this incredibly interesting and appealing continent.

Safety in South America

Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela are considered to be the most dangerous countries in South America. Like anywhere else in the world, any risks can be reduced with proper travel planning.

It would be a big mistake to wear or carry things that could mark you as a wealthy tourist. Anything that losing would make you unhappy shouldn't be packed. Keep only what you need with you and leave pricey jewelry, rings, accessories, and other valuables at the hotel. The same rule applies to credit cards and other documents; if you don't need them, leave them in the hotel safe and only bring the money you plan to use.
